To Submit or Not to Submit #1: Search Engine Submission

One service that you will probably stumble upon while looking for information on search engines and SEO are search engine submission services. But do these services really make a difference? Is submitting your site to search engines really worth the effort?

The truth is that submitting your website to a search engine is unnecessary, and you could end up wasting money with search engine submission services. So the bottom line is that search engine submission isn’t very useful, if not outright useless.

So how do search engines find and index your site?

Spider drawing

Creepy, Crawly, Creepy, Crawly

Search engines use something called spiders to crawl the web and find new sites. What are spiders? They are programs which automatically browse the web. Spiders go through all ready indexed pages (which may very well have changed since they were last crawled), and links on indexed pages that lead to other pages (including ones not yet indexed). This means that even if you just have one link to your page from an all ready indexed page, a search engine spider could quickly find your page and index it (though length of time it takes websites to be indexed is really variable).

Focus on Link Building

A much better use of your time and energy would be to focus on building links to your page, it is through ingoing links (yes that’s links from other pages into yours) that are going to help search engines index your page, and they are great for SEO. Search engine submission will not help your ranking.

While search engine submission isn’t useful, submission to website directories can be quite useful, and part 2 of To Submit or Not to Submit will deal with website directories. Stay tuned!
